In our testing, we found the hybrid setup to be responsive around town thanks to the strong shove from the electric motors; that said, it can get coarse-sounding under heavy throttle. The SE, XSE, and Nightshade versions have sportier suspension tuning, and we noticed tighter body control in the corners in our XSE test car, but we’re not fans of the steering, which lacks feel.

The EPA rates the LE with front-wheel-drive at 52 mpg city, 49 mpg highway, and 51 mpg combined; the SE, XLE, and XSE wear EPA ratings of 47 mpg city, 45 mpg highway, and 46 mpg combined. All-wheel-drive models fared thusly: the LE is rated for 50 mpg city, 49 mpg highway, and 50 mpg combined, while the SE and XLE are rated for a consistent 46 mpg city, 46 mpg highway, and 46 mpg combined. The top XSE AWD trim is rated for 43 mpg city, 43 mpg highway, and 43 mpg combined.
In our real-world 75-mph fuel economy testing, a top trim all-wheel drive XSE with 19-inch wheels returned 43 mpg, matching its EPA highway estimate. An XLE with 18-inch wheels returned 39 mpg, missing its EPA estimate by 7 mpg.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
First Row: There’s plenty of room for adults to get comfortable in the front seats. The dashboard design is highlighted by a large trim piece that stretches from the passenger’s side to the infotainment display. Cloth upholstery is standard, as is dual-zone automatic climate control with rear air vents. XLE and XSE models add leather upholstery, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, acoustic-laminated glass, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and adjustable rear-seat headrests.
Second Row: The rear seating style follows that of the front but offers slightly less padding and bolstering. Hip and shoulder room are decent, but headroom can be tight for taller passengers. The same can be said for Accord, but it offers about two inches more rear legroom than the Camry.
Cargo Capacity: In C/D testing, we fit seven carry-on suitcases in the trunk. With the rear seats folded, we fit 19. That parallels the storage of the Honda Accord, which matched the Camry’s seven carry-ons in the trunk but edged it out with 20 carry-ons with the seats down.
